Ceremonial signing of the NJ DREAM Act

Posted by liborioadorno11 on January 7, 2014 at 11:20 PM Comments comments (0)

On tuesday january 7th 2014, members of the New Jersey Dream Act Coalition attended the ceremonial signing of the NJ Dream Act at the Colin Powell Elementary School in Union City, NJ.

This is something that many members of the coalition have been fighting, and advocating for (some for almost 10 years).

We applaud the passage of this new law, as it is something that will benefit our community, especially Union City, but we still advocate for state aid. Although state aid provides a small economic relief, let's keep in mind that undocumented students are still not eligible for federal state aid, grants, and certain scholarships.

If we want true tuition equality then we must also allow undocumented students to apply for state aid.

In-State tuiton is the first step...

Let's remain together and let's keep on fighting for justice for our community!

NJ Tuition Equality Bill becomes LAW

We are so sorry for the late post.

On thursday December 19th The Tuition Equality Bill was approved at the State Assembly Floor.

Later the same day, it was conditionally vetoed by Governor Chris Christie.

The governor decided to veto the State Financial Aid portion of the bill even after promising equality for all students in New Jeresy at a latino leadership gala just a few months before the Gubernatorial elections.

The NJTED alliance, composed of various student and youth organizations have taken the conditional veto but promise that this is not the end and will continue to push for REAL Equality and to end modern day segregation in schools.

Choforitos United, a core member organization in the NJTED allience has decided to continue the fight until we pass a Full DREAM Act in New Jersey.

For now, Congratulation DREAMers, Tuition Equility Act is now LAW!!!

NJ Dream Act Passes the NJ Senate

Posted by liborioadorno11 on November 24, 2013 at 1:20 PM Comments comments (0)

For the past 10 years, youth, students, and allies have long been working for the passage of the New Jersey Tuition Equality Act, aka the New Jersey Dream Act.

The New Jersey Dream Act would allow undocumented youth, who have lived in New Jersey and have attended a NJ high school (at least 3 yrs) and have a diploma or GED, to pay in-state tuition at state colleges and universitites.

Currently, NJ Dreamers have to pay out-of-state tuition, or international tuition, even though many have lived in New Jersey for their entire lives.

Iit seems that the New Jersey Dream Act is getting closer and closer to becoming a reality.
